International Observances and Commemorative Dates:
- International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women Proclaimed by the UN General Assembly. The date was chosen in memory of the brutal assassination of the Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic, in 1960. This day also launches the annual campaign "16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence," which concludes on December 10, Human Rights Day.
