In Ukraine
Day of Remembrance for the Defenders of Ukraine who Died in the Struggle for Independence, Sovereignty, and Territorial Integrity of Ukraine. This date was established in 2019 by a decree of the President of Ukraine. It is dedicated to the events of August 29, 2014, when a tragedy occurred during the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the encirclement near Ilovaisk. The sunflower serves as the symbol for this day, as many defenders perished in sunflower fields.
International
International Day Against Nuclear Tests. This date was established by the UN General Assembly in 2009. The date was chosen deliberately: on August 29, 1991, the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in Kazakhstan was officially closed.
